Mixing Piano With Vocals

Mixing piano with vocals can be tricky. Even if they’re the only two elements of the song. In this video I show you how I mixed my cover of “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi. You can listen to the fully mixed and mastered cover here.

The main issue that you’re likely to face when vocals and piano together is getting them to sound cohesive and work well together without them masking each other and becoming muddy.

I show you how to achieve this by making use of EQ and compression. I also make use of side-chain compression for a balanced mix. Finally I show you how to make use of reverb and delay for a smooth and realistic ambience.

Feel free to skip to vocal mixing or piano mixing. And find out more about vocal mixing here.

Leave a comment below the video and let me know what your biggest struggle is with mixing vocals with piano, and I’d be happy to go into more detail.
